Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: BetzDearborn AE1703
  • Product Type: Anionic, high charge density, high molecular weight, polymeric flocculant (liquid emulsion)

Description and Use

BetzDearborn AE1703 is designed for industrial treatment programs as a coagulant aid or flocculant in clarification, thickening, and sludge dewatering processes. It is a cost-effective solution for solids separation in both influent and effluent water treatment.

Typical Applications

  • Produces a fast-settling floc, reducing carryover with inorganic or cationic polymeric coagulants.
  • Settles lime precipitate in raw water lime/soda softeners.
  • Settles iron oxide suspensions from steel industry wastewaters.
  • Settles precipitated hydrous metals in finishing water wastes.
  • Reduces fines in thickener effluents from blast furnace and steel mill scale operations, and BOP scrubbers.
  • Provides clean effluent from automotive oily waste treatment.
  • Increases settling in chrome/cyanide destruction units and heavy metal separation systems.
  • Reduces oil in refinery and other industrial wastewaters by improving air flotation unit and API separator efficiencies.
  • Acts as a sludge dewatering aid, producing clean filtrate, high solids capture, and a drier cake.

Treatment and Feeding Requirements

  • Preparation: Must be dissolved in water before use. Add pre-mixed polymer slowly to the vortex of an agitated tank. Do not add water to the neat polymer.
  • Initial Concentration: Recommended initial makedown concentration is 0.5% (range 0.3 to 1%).
  • Agitation: Use low-speed (350 rpm) mechanical agitation until complete dissolution. Avoid high shear or excessive agitation once dissolved.
  • Solution Stability: Diluted solutions are recommended for use within 24 hours for maximum activity.
  • Continuous Systems: Continuous makedown systems can produce more reliable results.
  • Application Dilution: Further dilution to approximately 0.1% enhances performance in most applications. For dewatering, dilution to approximately 0.25% may be more practical.
  • Feeding: Feed via pump, eductor, or gravity flow to a point of good mixing (not violent agitation). High-speed mixing decreases polymer activity.
  • Transfer Pumps: Use positive displacement gear or piston pumps.
  • Materials of Construction:
    • Liquid-side components: Stainless steel or most plastics (except LD polyethylene and polypropylene).
    • Mild steel: Acceptable only if contamination by corrosion products is not critical.
    • Rubbers: Viton and Tygon are acceptable for pump components and hose linings.

General Properties

Physical properties are available on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Packaging Information

Available as a liquid emulsion in a variety of containers. Contact SUEZ representative for details.

Storage and Handling

  • Storage Temperature: Store at moderate temperatures (7 to 38°C). Protect from freezing.
  • Outdoor Storage: Bulk containers should be insulated and heat traced if necessary.
  • Neat Polymer: Recirculate or mix periodically to avoid separation (one container volume per day).
  • Shelf Life: Recommended shelf life is six months.
  • Spills: Spilled polymer is very slippery. Wash small spills with copious amounts of water. Contain and absorb large spills on inert material before flushing with water.

Safety Precautions

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) with detailed information is available on request.
