Summary
Product Identification
BetzDearborn DCL95 is a powder product used for removing free and combined chlorine from reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration feedwaters. It is a high quality sodium metabisulfite (Na₂S₂O₅), >99% by weight.
Description and Features
- Ingredients are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by FDA for use in human or animal food.
- Economical to use.
Chemistry of Dechlorination
- Hydrolysis of sodium metabisulfite to sodium bisulfite: Na₂S₂O₅ + H₂O → 2NaHSO₃
- Deactivation of chlorine by sodium bisulfite: NaHSO₃ + HOCl → NaHSO₄ + HCl
Typical Applications
Used in feedwaters for membrane systems that have been treated with chlorine to prevent micro-biological growth. This protects thin film composite membranes from irreversible damage caused by oxidation.
Application Dosage
- 1.44 ppm (mg/L) of BetzDearborn DCL95 is required to remove 1 ppm (mg/L) of chlorine or chloramine.
- Dosage should be limited by the chlorine demand to avoid excess sodium bisulfite, which may increase microbiological growth.
- Consult with a SUEZ representative for assistance in identifying chlorine levels and determining DCL95 requirements.
Stability
- Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for detailed stability information.
- The product may degrade slowly due to oxygen exposure after opening, with degradation rate increasing at higher temperatures.
- Solutions are limited to a maximum concentration of approximately 20%.
- Solutions should ideally be used within 1 week due to active concentration degradation over time.
- When using in an open day tank, mild agitation should only be used for solution preparation. Do not use agitation after preparation and monitor active concentration weekly.
- Consult with your SUEZ representative for optimum dilution concentration and solution stability.
Packaging Information
