Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: BetzDearborn IEC5E
  • Product Type: Resin cleaner
  • Manufacturer: Water Technologies & Solutions (SUEZ)

Description and Use

BetzDearborn IEC5E is a liquid cleaner formulated with non-ionic surfactants. It is designed to remove organic material and silt from ion exchange resins. The product aims to solubilize organic surface coatings and loosen trapped insoluble materials. It is intended for use prior to regeneration to improve contact and efficiency, and can also be used for out-of-service cleaning to remove surface material.

Benefits

  • Free of Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs).
  • Cleans organic material and silt from ion exchange resins.
  • Increases regeneration efficiency.
  • Saves regenerant and increases resin throughput.
  • Extends resin life, reducing replacement costs.
  • Improves feedwater quality.
  • Suitable for cation and anion resins.
  • Easy-to-apply liquid.

Typical Applications

The product addresses fouling issues on ion exchange resins caused by:

  • Organically bound iron passing through cation units and fouling anion resins.
  • Oil fouling that blocks ion exchange sites, leading to increased pressure drop, resin loss, channeling, and premature breakthrough.
  • Microbiological growth, where nitrates and other organic compounds in the water act as nutrients. Waste organics from microbial decay can foul anion resins.
  • Natural and man-made organic compounds from surface water supplies, which can degrade strong-base anion sites, reducing capacity and efficiency, particularly for silica and carbonate removal.

BetzDearborn IEC5E can be added to backwash water for routine maintenance and control of inorganic, silt, oil, and microbiological material buildup. For severely fouled beds, an out-of-service cleaning may be required. Air lancing or percolation can enhance contact and contaminant breakup during off-line cleaning.

Treatment and Feeding Requirements

  • Feed Point: Can be added with backwash water prior to regeneration or directly to the vessel for out-of-service use.
  • Feed Rate: Varies based on the time between out-of-service cleanings.
    • In Service: Apply to achieve 300 mg/L to 800 mg/L (0.3 to 0.8 kg/m³) in backwash water.
    • Out of Service: Apply to obtain a concentration of 28 mL/ft³ (1 L/m³) of resin when the bed is covered with 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) of water. Use 120°F (49°C) water if fouling is severe, respecting resin temperature limits.
  • Dilution: Can be fed neat (undiluted) or diluted with water.
  • Equipment Compatibility: Mild steel, stainless steel, PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, and Kynar plastics are suitable for pumps, piping, and tanks. An air lance should be used for agitation during off-line servicing if bed percolation is not possible.
