Description and Use

BetzDearborn IEC6 is a liquid blend of organic surfactants designed to:

• Solubilize organic surface coatings.
• Loosen silt and other insoluble materials trapped on ion exchange resin beads.

It can be used for in-service maintenance cleaning or out-of-service cleaning of both cation and anion resins. Cleaning prior to regeneration improves regenerant contact and organic removal, thereby increasing regeneration efficiency.

Typical Applications

Ion exchange resins can become fouled by organic and inorganic compounds present in water. This fouling can lead to:

• Blocked ion exchange sites.
• Resin clumping.
• Increased pressure drop.
• Loss of resin during backwash.
• Channeling.
• Premature breakthrough.

BetzDearborn IEC6 can be added to backwash water or directly to the vessel for cleaning. It helps maintain bed performance by controlling the buildup of inorganics, silt, oil, and microbiological materials.

Treatment and Feeding Requirements

Feed Point

• Can be applied with backwash prior to regeneration.
• Can be added directly to the vessel for out-of-service use.

Feed Rate

• In Service: Add BetzDearborn IEC6 to achieve 100 - 300 ppm in the backwash water. Usage depends on the interval between out-of-service cleanings.
• Out of Service: Add BetzDearborn IEC6 to the unit to achieve a concentration of 350 ppm in the water when the bed is covered with 4-6 inches of water. Use 49°C water if fouling is severe, provided it is within the temperature limits for the resin being treated.

Dilution

• May be fed neat (undiluted).
• May be diluted with water to a convenient strength.

• Kynar plastics

An air lance should be used to agitate the bed during off-line servicing if bed percolation is not possible.
