Summary
Product identification
- Product Name: FloSize 189
- Product Type: Cellulose acetate membrane sizing agent
Description and Use
FloSize 189 is a polymer-based additive designed to improve salt rejection in partially hydrolyzed cellulose acetate (CA) membranes. It is effective on all cellulose acetate blends but should never be used on thin-film composite membranes. For optimal effectiveness, the normalized salt rejection of the CA system should not be below 90%.
Operating Limits
- FloSize 189 is effective when used to restore salt rejection in CA systems to the manufacturer's specification range.
- The treatment procedure can be accomplished in less than 30 minutes without requiring system downtime.
Important Notes
- Sizing does not replicate the original membrane surface chemistry or its longevity.
- Sized membranes are more susceptible to feed water pH fluctuations and cleaning. Cleaning may necessitate re-sizing.
- At low storage temperatures, the packaged product may become cloudy and separate. Warming and stirring will restore a clear, homogeneous solution.
Dosing and Use Instructions
- Pre-treatment: Clean the RO system with a low pH cleaner (Kleen MCT103) followed by a neutral pH cleaner (Kleen MCT107). Contact a SUEZ representative for specific cleaning protocols.
- System Restart: Restart the RO system under normal operating parameters.
- Performance Check: Evaluate flow and rejection for each pressure vessel. Analyze vessels with abnormal readings.
- Maintenance: Replace defective O-rings and leaking modules.
- Chemical Injection: Acid injection equipment can be used, but must be thoroughly rinsed of acid before use, as the polymer can precipitate at low pH.
- Solution pH: The FloSize 189 solution should be maintained at pH 8. Adjust with ammonium hydroxide if necessary.
- Antiscalant Discontinuation: Stop feeding antiscalant.
- Drainage: Direct permeate and concentrate to drain.
- Pre-injection Flush: Operate the RO system at pH 7.0 for at least 5 minutes before injecting FloSize 189 to ensure proper membrane adherence.
- Injection Rate: Begin injecting FloSize 189 at a rate of 300 ppm. Note that the concentrate stream will contain high levels of unused polymer.
- Injection Duration: Continue injection until desired rejection levels are achieved or rejection stabilizes.
- Post-injection Flush: Discontinue FloSize 189 injection and operate the system for 15 minutes at pH 7 to flush residual polymer.
- Antiscalant Restart: Restart antiscalant injection.
- Pump Flush: Thoroughly flush the chemical injection pump by recirculating pH 8 water.
- Acid Injection Restart: Restart acid injection and adjust system feed pH to the standard operating range of 5.5 to 6.0.
- System Reconnection: Reconnect permeate and concentrate to standard operating configurations.
- Monitoring: Closely monitor system performance for 48 hours; normalized rejection should be stable.
