Summary
Product identification
Kleen* MCT103 is a low pH, liquid formulation designed specifically to remove metal hydroxides, calcium carbonate, and other similar scales from membrane separation systems.
Description and use
Kleen MCT103 is formulated to remove calcium carbonate and metal hydroxide-based scales from membrane surfaces. It is intended for use in tandem with alkaline cleaners for organics and particulate removal to help preserve membrane life.
Typical applications
This cleaner is used to address scaling from hardness and metal salts that can occur in membrane separation systems, leading to reduced water flow, increased operating pressure, and potential product water quality decline or membrane damage. Indications for cleaning include:
- Significant decrease in normalized permeate flow
- Significant increase in pressure drop across the system (or individual stage)
- Increase in normalized salt passage leading to unacceptable product quality
Treatment and feeding requirements
Feed system
This product should be used in conjunction with membrane cleaning equipment supplied by the membrane system manufacturer.
Dilution
The product must be diluted prior to introduction into the membrane system. The recommended dilution is 1 to 3% by weight.
Materials compatibility
Corrosion-resistant equipment, such as PVC, should be used for storage and preparation. Pumping materials in contact with the diluted product should also be corrosion resistant.
General cleaning instructions
A general cleaning procedure is outlined below. For optimum cleaning, contact your SUEZ representative.
- Inspect and clean the cleaning tank, hoses, and install new cartridge filters.
- Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or demineralised water and start the agitator or recirculation pump.
- Slowly add Kleen MCT103 to the cleaning tank. The recommended addition is 1 to 3 kg of product per 100 liters of water (or 1 lb per 5 gallons). Mix thoroughly.
- Check and adjust solution temperature to the optimum level as recommended by the membrane manufacturer.
- Check and adjust solution pH to between 2.5 – 3.5, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjust pH upward with NaOH or downward with hydrochloric acid as needed.
- Circulate the solution through one stage at a time in the direction of feed flow for 30 minutes at the manufacturer's recommended flow rate. The pressure should be low enough to prevent permeate production, but always less than 4 barg. For heavily fouled systems, the first return flow (up to 15% of the cleaning tank volume) may need to be diverted to drain. Clean each stage separately.
- If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, or if pH or temperature moves out of the recommended range, dump the tank and prepare a fresh cleaning solution for each stage.
- Rinse with RO permeate before returning the system to service.
- When returning the unit to service, divert product water to drain until all residual cleaning solution has been rinsed from the system.
