Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: Kleen* MCT405
  • Product Type: liquid alkaline membrane cleaner

Description and Use

Kleen MCT405 is a liquid proprietary caustic blend containing surfactants and detergents. It is recommended for removing organic foulants, such as oils and bioproteins, from membrane elements. It is designed for use on Polyamide (PA) membrane elements only; it should not be used on Cellulose Acetate (CA) membranes. The product is NSF certified for use in potable water applications (certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 60).

Typical Applications

Kleen MCT405 is used for clean-in-place (CIP) off-line cleaning of membrane separation systems to remove organic fouling and suspended solids that can accumulate on membrane surfaces. Signs indicating the need for cleaning include a significant decrease in normalized permeate flow, a significant increase in pressure drop, or an increase in normalized salt passage. Regular cleaning with Kleen MCT405, in conjunction with a low pH cleaner like Kleen MCT103 for scale and particulate removal, can help preserve membrane life.

Treatment and Feeding Requirements

  • Membrane Compatibility: For PA membrane elements only. Do not use on CA membranes.
  • Feed System: Use in conjunction with membrane cleaning equipment supplied by the membrane/RO system manufacturer.
  • Dilution: The product must be diluted prior to use.
    • Recommended dilution: 1 pound (0.45 kg) of Kleen MCT405 per 5 gallons (19 L) of water.
    • Alternatively: Approximately 1 gallon (3.8 L) of Kleen MCT405 for each 50 gallons (189 L) of water.
  • Target Conductivity: 2,400 to 3,000 micromhos for the recommended dilution.
  • Cleaning Solution Temperature: Do not allow the temperature to exceed 95°F (34°C).
  • Cleaning Solution pH: Target range is 11.0 to 12.0, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer.
  • Circulation Flow Rate: As recommended by the membrane or system manufacturer.
  • Circulation Pressure: Less than 60 psig (4.2 kg/cm²).
  • Foaming: This product is a moderate foamer. Minimize foaming by submerging return lines in the cleaning tank. Do not apply an antifoam, as most are not compatible with PA membranes.

General Cleaning Instructions

  1. Inspect and clean the cleaning tank, hoses, and install new cartridge filters.
  2. Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water and start the agitator or recirculation pump.
  3. Slowly add the recommended amount of Kleen MCT405 and mix thoroughly.
  4. Check and adjust solution temperature (do not exceed 95°F/34°C).
  5. Check and adjust solution pH to the target range (11.0-12.0).
  6. Circulate the solution in the direction of feed flow for 30 minutes at the manufacturer's recommended flow rate and pressure (< 60 psig/4.2 kg/cm²). Divert the first 15% of return flow to drain for heavily fouled systems. Clean each stage separately in a multistage system.
  7. Manage foaming by submerging return lines.
  8. If the cleaning solution becomes turbid, discolored, or its pH or temperature moves out of range, prepare a fresh solution.
  9. Rinse the system with RO permeate water.
  10. When returning the system to service, divert product water to drain until residual cleaning solution is fully rinsed.

A soak period may be necessary depending on the fouling.

Safety Precautions

  • Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for detailed information.
  • Use corrosion-resistant materials for storage and handling. Consult your SUEZ representative for recommended materials of construction.
