Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: Kleen* MCT407
  • Product Type: Membrane cleaner

Description and Use

Kleen MCT407 is a low pH liquid formulation designed to remove metal hydroxides, calcium carbonate, and similar scales from reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), ultrafiltration (UF), and microfiltration (MF) membranes. It is a low-foaming, buffered liquid that maintains an effective pH over a range of dilutions and performs well at elevated temperatures. When used with an alkaline cleaner, it can improve cleaning results, extend system run times, and optimize membrane life.

Typical Applications

This cleaner addresses scaling caused by the precipitation of dissolved solids from feed water, which can lead to reduced water production, high operating pressure, excessive pressure drop, and potentially irreversible membrane damage. It can also affect product water quality by allowing increased dissolved material passage. Indications for cleaning include a significant decrease in normalized permeate flow, an increase in pressure drop, or an unacceptable rise in normalized salt passage.

Feed Requirements

Feed System

  • Should be applied using membrane cleaning equipment supplied by the membrane system manufacturer.
  • Contact SUEZ representative for information on obtaining or fabricating a cleaning system if needed.

Dilution

  • Recommended dilution: 1.4 lb (0.64 kg) of Kleen MCT407 per 5 gallons (19 L) of water.
  • Alternatively: Approximately 1.4 gal (5.4 L) of Kleen MCT407 for each 50 gallons (189 L) of water.

Materials Compatibility

  • Compatible with most industrial materials used for storage and dosing.
  • Consult with a SUEZ representative for specific details.

General Cleaning Instructions

A general cleaning procedure is provided, but for optimal results, contact your SUEZ representative.

  1. Inspect and clean/flush the cleaning tank, hoses, and install new cartridge filters.
  2. Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water and turn on the agitator or recirculation pump.
  3. Slowly add Kleen MCT407 to the tank at the recommended dilution and allow it to mix thoroughly.
  4. Check and adjust the solution temperature to the recommended optimum level. If not available, contact your SUEZ representative.
  5. Check and adjust the solution pH. The target pH is 2 to 3, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjustments can be made with NaOH or hydrochloric acid as appropriate.
    • Circulate the solution through one stage at a time in the direction of feed flow for 30 minutes.
    • Circulate at the manufacturer's recommended flow rate. If not available, contact your SUEZ representative.
    • Operating pressure should be low enough to produce minimal permeate but always less than 60 psig (4.2 kg/cm²).
    • For heavy fouling, divert the first return flow (up to 15% of cleaning tank volume) to drain to prevent solids re-deposition.
    • Clean each stage separately in a multi-stage system.
  6. If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, dump the tank and prepare a fresh solution. Prepare new solutions for each stage or if pH or temperature moves out of range.
  7. Rinse with RO permeate before returning the system to service.
  8. When returning the unit to service, divert product water to drain until residual cleaning solution is rinsed from the system.
    • A soak period may be necessary depending on the fouling nature; consult your SUEZ representative.

Packaging Information

Kleen MCT407 is available in various containers and delivery methods. Contact your SUEZ representative for details.
