Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: Kleen* MCT503
  • Product Type: Membrane cleaner
  • Formulation: Liquid product, low foaming, buffered to maintain effective pH
  • Key Features: Enhanced performance at elevated temperatures, no adverse effects with repeated use, self-affirmed GRAS for membrane process applications.

Description and Use

Kleen MCT503 is a low pH liquid formulation designed to remove metal hydroxides, calcium carbonate, and similar scales from RO, NF, UF, and MF membranes. It is intended for use in conjunction with a high pH Kleen MCT product for optimal results in cleaning applications.

Typical Applications

This product addresses scaling from hardness and metal salts that can precipitate on membrane surfaces during operation, leading to reduced water flow, increased operating pressure, excessive pressure drop, and potentially irreversible membrane damage or unacceptable product water quality. Cleaning is recommended when:

  • Normalized permeate flow significantly decreases.
  • Pressure drop across the system (or stage) significantly increases.
  • Normalized salt passage increases to an unacceptable level.

Feed Requirements

  • Application: Should be applied using membrane cleaning equipment supplied by the membrane system manufacturer. Contact SUEZ representative if such a system is unavailable.
  • Dilution: Recommended dilution is 1.4 lb (0.64 kg) of Kleen MCT503 per 5 gallons (19 L) of water (approximately 1.4 gal [5.4 L] of Kleen MCT503 for each 50 gallons [189 L] of water).
  • Materials Compatibility: Use corrosion-resistant equipment for storage, preparation, and use.
    • Rating A: Viton A, Buna N, Hypalon, Neoprene, EPR, Natural Rubber, Viton Lithurge, Kynar, Polypropylene, Teflon
    • Rating B: LB, SS, Butyl, Buna S, Polyethyl HD & LD, PVC, Polyethyl HDCL, Polysulfone
    • Rating C: LCS, Al, Nylon
    • (Note: Viton and Teflon are registered trademarks of E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company. Kynar is a registered trademark of Arkema Inc.)

General Cleaning Instructions

  1. Inspect and clean/flush cleaning tank, hoses, and install new cartridge filters.
  2. Fill cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water. Activate agitator or recirculation pump.
  3. Slowly add Kleen MCT503 to the cleaning tank at the recommended dilution (1.4 lb [0.45 kg] or 1.4 gal [5.4 L] per 5 gallons [19 L] or 50 gallons [189 L] of water, respectively) and mix thoroughly.
  4. Check and adjust solution temperature to the recommended level for optimal cleaning (contact SUEZ representative if manufacturer's recommendation is unavailable).
  5. Check and adjust solution pH to between 2 to 3, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjustments can be made with NaOH (or other recommended chemical) for higher pH or hydrochloric acid for lower pH.
  6. Circulate the solution in the direction of feed flow at the recommended rate for a minimum of 30 minutes. Minimize permeate production during cleaning. Divert the first return flow (up to 15% of tank volume) to drain in cases of heavy fouling. Clean each stage separately in a multi-stage system.
  7. If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, or if pH or temperature moves out of range, dump the tank and prepare a fresh solution for each stage.
  8. Rinse with RO permeate before returning the system to service.
  9. When returning the unit to service, divert product water to drain until all residual cleaning solution is rinsed from the system.

A soak period may be necessary for optimum results depending on the fouling nature; consult your SUEZ representative.
