Summary
Product identification
- Product name: Kleen* MCT515
- Product type: Liquid alkaline membrane cleaner
Description and Use
Kleen MCT515 is a proprietary buffered alkaline liquid cleaner containing detergent surface active agents with wetting and emulsifying activities. It is formulated to remove organic foulants such as oils and bioproteins from membrane elements. The cleaner is buffered to maintain pH over a range of dilutions and offers enhanced performance at elevated temperatures. It is specifically designed for use on PA membrane elements; it should not be used on CA membranes.
Typical Applications
This cleaner is recommended for removing organic foulants, biofilm, colloidal, and iron materials from membrane surfaces. Fouling impedes water flow, potentially leading to low production, high operating pressure, or membrane damage. It can also impact product water quality. Indications for cleaning include a significant decrease in normalized permeate flow, an increase in pressure drop, or an unacceptable increase in normalized salt passage.
Treatment and Feeding Requirements
- Membrane compatibility: For use on PA membrane elements only. Do not use on CA membranes.
- Feed system: Use in conjunction with membrane cleaning equipment. Contact SUEZ representative for system information if not available.
- Dilution:
- Recommended dilution: 1 pound (0.45 kg) of Kleen MCT515 per 5 gallons (19 L) of water (approximately 1 gallon (3.8 L) per 50 gallons (189 L) of water).
- The target conductivity range for this dilution is based on product strength:
- 0.5% concentration: pH 11.34, Conductivity 2,032 µS
- 1.0% concentration: pH 11.51, Conductivity 3,590 µS
- 1.5% concentration: pH 11.62, Conductivity 5,063 µS
- 2.0% concentration: pH 11.70, Conductivity 6,549 µS
- 2.5% concentration: pH 11.75, Conductivity 7,974 µS
- 3.0% concentration: pH 11.79, Conductivity 9,327 µS
General Cleaning Instructions
- Inspect and clean the cleaning tank, hoses, and install new cartridge filters.
- Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water and start the agitator or recirculation pump.
- Slowly add the recommended amount of Kleen MCT515 to the cleaning tank and mix thoroughly.
- Check solution temperature. Adjust heating control if necessary. Do not exceed 104°F (40°C).
- Check solution pH. Target range is 11.0 to 12.0, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjust pH with NaOH or hydrochloric acid as needed.
- Circulate the solution in the direction of feed flow for 30 minutes at the manufacturer's recommended flow rate. Circulation pressure should be less than 60 psig (4.2 kg/cm²). Divert the first return flow (up to 15% of tank volume) to drain in cases of heavy fouling. Clean each stage separately in a multistage system.
- Minimize foaming by placing permeate and concentrate return lines below the liquid level in the CIP tank. Use a spray-hose for foam knockdown if needed. Do not use antifoam agents incompatible with PA membranes.
- If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, or if pH or temperature moves out of the recommended range, prepare a fresh solution.
- Rinse with RO permeate water before returning the system to service.
- Divert product water to drain until residual cleaning solution is rinsed from the system upon return to service. A soak period may be necessary for optimal results depending on fouling.
