Summary

Product identification

  • Product Name: Kleen* MCT515E
  • Product Type: Liquid alkaline membrane cleaner

Description and Use

Kleen MCT515E is a proprietary buffered alkaline liquid cleaner formulation containing detergent surface active agents with wetting and emulsifying activities. It is designed to provide superior cleaning of organics, biofilm, colloidal and iron materials from membrane surfaces.

  • Cost-effective membrane cleaner.
  • Buffered to maintain desired pH over a range of dilutions.
  • Enhanced performance at elevated temperatures.
  • For use on PA membrane elements only. Do not use on CA membranes.

It is recommended for removing organic foulants such as oils and bioproteins from membrane elements.

Typical Applications

This cleaner is used for clean-in-place (CIP) off-line cleaning of membrane separation systems when organic materials and suspended solids accumulate on the membrane surface, causing reduced water flow, increased operating pressure, or declining product water quality.

Indications for cleaning include:

  • Significant decrease in normalized permeate flow.
  • Significant increase in pressure drop across the system or stage.
  • Increase in normalized salt passage leading to unacceptable product quality.

Treatment and Feeding Requirements

  • Compatibility: Do not use on CA membranes.
  • Feeding System: Use in conjunction with membrane cleaning equipment supplied by the membrane/RO system manufacturer.
  • Dilution: The product must be diluted prior to introduction into the membrane system.
    • Recommended dilution: One pound (0.45 kg) of Kleen MCT515E per 5 gallons (19 L) of water.
    • Alternatively: Approximately one gallon (3.8 L) of Kleen MCT515E for each 50 gallons (189 L) of water.

The target conductivity range for diluted Kleen MCT515E is based on % product strength:

Concentration (%)pHConductivity (µS)
0.511.342,032
111.513,590
1.511.625,063
211.706,549
2.511.757,974
311.799,327

General Cleaning Instructions

  1. Inspect and clean the cleaning tank, hoses, and cartridge filters.
  2. Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water. Activate agitator or recirculation pump.
  3. Slowly add the recommended amount of Kleen MCT515E and allow to mix thoroughly.
  4. Temperature: Check solution temperature. If lower than recommended, adjust heating. Do not exceed 104°F (40°C).
  5. pH: Check solution pH. Target range is 11.0 to 12.0, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjust pH upward with NaOH or downward with hydrochloric acid if necessary.
  6. Circulate solution in the direction of feed flow for 30 minutes at the manufacturer's recommended flow rate.
    • Operating Pressure: Less than 60 psig (4.2 kg/cm²).
    • For heavy fouling: Divert the first return flow (up to 15% of cleaning tank volume) to drain.
    • Multistage systems: Clean each stage separately.
  7. Foaming: This product is a moderate foamer. Minimize foaming by submerging permeate and concentrate return lines. Do not apply an antifoam, as most are not compatible with PA membranes.
  8. If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, or if pH or temperature moves out of the recommended range, dump the tank and prepare a fresh solution.
  9. Rinse the system with RO permeate water before returning to service.
  10. When returning the unit to service, divert product water to drain until residual cleaning solution is rinsed from the system. A soak period may be necessary depending on fouling.

Storage and Handling

  • Use corrosion-resistant materials for storage and handling. Consult your SUEZ representative for recommended materials of construction.
