Summary

Product identification

Liquiclean 511 is a liquid formulation designed to remove organics, silt, and other particulate deposits from membranes.

Description

  • Compatible with polyamide thin-film composite membranes.
  • Recommended for use in conjunction with Kleen MCT882 and BioMate MBC881.
  • Extremely effective against oils and many other organic compounds.
  • Excellent for cleaning biological matter and eliminating biological slime from membrane surfaces.
  • Buffered to maintain an effective pH over a range of dilutions.
  • Enhanced performance at elevated temperatures.
  • Liquid cleaner allowing shorter mixing time.
  • Low foam formulation.
  • No adverse effects with repeated use.

Liquiclean 511 is a high pH liquid formulation designed to remove organics, silt, and other particulate deposits from polysulfone, fluorocarbon, and all polyamide thin film composite reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. The product is effectively used in nanofiltration (NF), and microfiltration (MF) applications. It provides superior cleaning, allowing for longer run times.

Note: Do not use Liquiclean 511 on cellulose acetate membranes. Liquiclean 511 is not a biocide.

Typical Applications

Organic materials and suspended solids in incoming water can accumulate on membrane surfaces, creating an environment conducive to microbiological activity and fouling. This fouling can lead to reduced production, increased operating pressure, higher pressure drop, or irreversible membrane damage. It can also degrade product water quality. A clean-in-place (CIP) procedure is recommended to remove these foulants before they cause significant issues. Indications for cleaning include a decrease in normalized permeate flow, an increase in system pressure drop, or an increase in normalized salt passage impacting product quality.

Liquiclean 511 contains a blend of solubilizing and complexing agents to remove organic and particulate foulants. When used with an acidic cleaner for scale removal, regular cleanings with Liquiclean 511 can help preserve membrane life. A soak period may be necessary for optimum results depending on the fouling.

Application

  • Do not use Liquiclean 511 on cellulose acetate membranes.
  • For optimum results, use Liquiclean 511 in combination with Kleen MCT882, and BioMate MBC881.

Feed Requirements

  • Feed System: Should be used in conjunction with membrane cleaning equipment supplied by the membrane system manufacturer.
  • Dilution: The product must be diluted prior to use. The recommended dilution is one pound (0.45 kg) of Liquiclean 511 per 5 gallons (19 L) of water, or approximately one gallon (3.8 L) of Liquiclean 511 for each 50 gallons (189 L) of water.
  • Materials Compatibility: Corrosion-resistant equipment, such as PVC, should be used for storage and preparation. Pumping materials in contact with concentrated or diluted product should also be corrosion-resistant.

General Cleaning Instructions

  1. Inspect and clean the cleaning tank, hoses, and cartridge filter. Install new cartridge filters.
  2. Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water. Activate the agitator or recirculation pump.
  3. Slowly add Liquiclean 511 to the cleaning tank (1 gal [3.8 L] of product for every 50 gal [189 L] of water) and mix thoroughly.
  4. Check and adjust the solution temperature to the recommended level for optimum cleaning. Consult your SUEZ representative if manufacturer recommendations are unavailable.
  5. Check the solution pH. The target pH should be 10 to 11.5, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjust pH upwards with NaOH or downwards with hydrochloric acid as needed.
  6. Circulate the solution through one stage at a time, in the direction of feed flow, for 30 minutes at the flow rate recommended by the membrane or system manufacturer. If manufacturer recommendations are unavailable, contact your SUEZ representative. Pressure should be low enough to prevent permeate production during cleaning, but always less than 60 psig (4.2 kg/cm²).
  7. For heavy fouling, divert the first return flow (up to 15% of the cleaning tank volume) to drain to prevent solids redeposition. Clean each stage separately in a multi-stage system for optimum results.
  8. If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, dump the tank and prepare a fresh solution. Prepare a new solution if pH or temperature move out of the recommended range. A new cleaning solution should be prepared for each stage.
  9. Rinse with RO permeate before returning the system to service.
  10. When returning the unit to service, divert product water to drain until any residual cleaning solution is rinsed from the system.
