Summary

Product identification

MemChem MCT201 is a solid membrane cleaner.

Description and use

MemChem MCT201 is a low pH solid formulation designed to remove particulate fouling, metal hydroxides, calcium carbonate, and other similar foulants from nanofiltration (NF), ultrafiltration (UF), and microfiltration (MF) membrane systems. It can also be used for reverse osmosis (RO) cleaning and in tandem with neutral and alkaline SUEZ cleaners for organics and particulate removal.

Typical applications

This product is suitable for use with all types of membranes, specially designed for Ultrafiltration and Microfiltration systems. It is also applicable for NF and RO systems. Cleaning is indicated by:

  • A significant decrease in normalized permeate flow.
  • A significant increase in pressure drop across the system (Transmembrane pressure).
  • In RO and NF systems, an increase in normalized salt passage such that product quality is unacceptable.

Feed requirements

Dilution

The recommended dilution is 0.2% - 3% of MemChem MCT201.

General cleaning instructions

The system must be offline when performing cleaning using a CIP system.

  1. Inspect and clean the cleaning tank, hoses, and cartridge filters. Install new cartridge filters if available.
  2. Fill the cleaning tank with RO permeate or DI water for RO and NF systems, or filtrated water for UF and MF systems. Activate the agitator or tank recirculation pump.
  3. Heat the water to the maximum allowed temperature by the system manufacturer, normally below 40°C (104°F).
  4. Slowly add MemChem MCT201 to the cleaning tank at the recommended concentration (0.2% - 3%) and mix thoroughly.
  5. Check the solution pH. It should be 2 to 3, or as recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Adjust pH upward with Betz MPH2500 or downward with Betz MPH5000 if necessary.
  6. Circulate the solution through one stage at a time, in the direction of feed flow, for 30 minutes at the manufacturer's recommended flow rate.
  7. Maintain pressure low enough to produce minimal permeate, but always less than 60 psig (4.2 kg/cm²).
  8. For heavy fouling, divert the first return flow (up to 15% of the cleaning tank volume) to drain.
  9. In RO systems, clean each stage separately in a multistage system for optimum results.
  10. Monitor pH, conductivity, and temperature to ensure correct product concentration and optimal temperature. pH should stabilize after removing carbonates and metal oxides.
  11. Stop recirculation and soak for 30 minutes.
  12. Repeat recirculation and soaking stages based on foulant amount. Contact SUEZ if cleaning is not resulting in recovery.
  13. If the cleaning solution becomes turbid or discolored, prepare a fresh solution. Prepare a new cleaning solution for each stage.
  14. Rinse with RO/NF permeates for these systems or Filtrated UF/MF water for UF/MF systems until the rinse water conductivity matches the system's rinsing water.
  15. When returning the unit to service, divert product water to drain for at least 30 minutes to ensure residual cleaning solution is removed.
