Treatment and Feeding Requirements

Initial Preparation

  • Thoroughly agitate with a drum mixer or recirculating pump for 30 to 60 minutes to ensure homogeneity before initial use.
  • Remix for several minutes daily.
  • Bulk system recirculation should operate for 30 to 60 minutes daily.
  • Avoid water contamination in open containers.

Stock Solutions Preparation

  • Make-down Concentration: Prepare a 0.5% to 1.0% solution in the make-down unit.
  • Process:
    1. Fill the solution preparation tank with water until the agitator blade is fully immersed.
    2. Begin agitating.
    3. Slowly add the premixed polymer to the solution tank through a disperser unit or into the vortex. Do not add water to polymer.
    4. Continue filling the tank with water to achieve the 0.5% to 1.0% concentration.
    5. Mix for an additional 10 to 20 minutes at low speed (350 rpm) for activity development. Avoid high speed agitation.
  • Holding Tank: Transfer the stock solution to a holding tank.
  • Application Concentration: Further dilute to approximately 0.2% before the point of application.
  • Feed Type: Continuous feed is recommended.

Pumping and Materials of Construction

  • Neat Product: Can be handled with gear or diaphragm pumps suitable for viscosities up to approximately 2500 cps.
  • Tank, Tubing, Piping, Pumps: Type 304 or 316 stainless steel, Teflon, and rigid PVC are satisfactory.
  • Pump Components and Hose Linings: Viton and fluorosilicon type rubbers are suitable.
  • Short-term Installations: Flexible PVC tubing (e.g., Tygon*), Buna-N, and Neoprene rubber may be used but may not be satisfactory in permanent applications.
  • Temporary Use: Mild steel and copper alloys can be used if discoloration from corrosion products is acceptable.
  • Stock Solutions: Handle with the same materials of construction.
  • Metering: Positive displacement pumps (gear or piston) can be used.
  • Bulk Tank Storage: Should include a desiccant and recirculation system.
