Summary

Product identification

OptiSperse HP5493 is a water treatment chemical, specifically an alkaline blend of phosphate and polymeric dispersant. It is designed for use in boilers.

Description and use

OptiSperse HP5493 provides protection against metal oxide deposition and caustic corrosion. It features a tailored sodium to phosphate ratio for optimum control and is supplied as an easy-to-handle liquid formulation.

This product is intended for use in boilers that are fed with high-quality water, including:

  • Demineralised water
  • Mixed bed water
  • Double pass RO water
  • EDI water
  • Condensate

A complete boiler water treatment program may require a separate feed of an organic oxygen scavenger and a neutralising amine.

All ingredients in OptiSperse HP5493 are listed in FDA 21CFR173.310 as boiler water additives for use in the preparation of steam that will contact food.

Problem description: Caustic corrosion

Increasing demand for high purity boiler feedwater can increase the potential for caustic corrosion. Major contaminants are typically iron and copper oxides. Iron deposits are porous, facilitating the ingress of boiler water towards the tube surface. This can lead to a "sculpture chimney effect" as steam escapes. If sodium hydroxide is present, it can concentrate under the deposit, potentially causing caustic gouging.

Protection against caustic corrosion

OptiSperse HP5493 combats caustic corrosion through two mechanisms:

  1. Minimizing metal oxide deposition: A synthetic polymer in OptiSperse HP5493 coats and disperses iron and copper oxide particles, preventing them from adhering to metal surfaces and thus reducing sites where caustic can concentrate.
  2. Neutralising free caustic: The phosphate buffer neutralises free caustic in the boiler water. When the boiler water pH is maintained between 9.2 and 10.2, phosphates convert to the HPO₄²⁻ species. Sufficient HPO₄²⁻ then neutralises free hydroxide according to the reaction: Na₂HPO₄ + NaOH → Na₃PO₄ + H₂O

Treatment and feeding requirements

  • Feed point: OptiSperse HP5493 should be fed into the boiler drum or alternatively into the boiler feedwater line after the attemperation spray water take-off point. Consult your local SUEZ representative for specific system conditions and optimum dosing points.
  • Feed rate: Feed sufficient OptiSperse HP5493 to maintain the recommended boiler water phosphate residual. The feed rate depends on operating pressure, heat transfer rate, and feedwater quality.
  • Dilution: OptiSperse HP5493 can be fed neat or diluted with demineralised water or condensate. Dilution is mandatory when feeding directly to the boiler drum.
