Summary

Product identification

  • Product Line: Oltremare SAL series
  • Type: Extra Low Energy, Excellent Productivity, Heat Sanitizable Fullfit Element Brackish Water RO elements
  • Membrane: RO – HS Fullfit Net Wrapped
  • Membrane Type: Polyamide
  • Key Features: Heat sanitizable elements produce high-quality water and can withstand sanitization with hot water, reducing chemical sanitizer needs. Fullfit configuration improves cleaning, sanitizing, and bio-control by eliminating "stagnant" flow areas, ensuring maximum ion removal with minimal fouling.

Membrane Characteristics

  • Stabilized Salt Rejection:
    • 99.2% for 8040 and 4040 modules (b)
    • 99% for 4021 modules (c)
  • Minimum Salt Rejection:
    • 99.0% for 8040 and 4040 modules (b)
    • 98% for 4021 modules (c)

Operating limits

  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 41 bar (600 psi)
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 45 °C (113 °F) / 35 °C (95 °F) @pH>10
  • Maximum Sanitizing Temperature: 85 °C (185 °F)
  • Cleaning pH Range: 1.0 – 12.0 (d)
  • Chlorine Tolerance: < 0.1 ppm (e)
  • Maximum Pressure Drop: 0.7 bar (10 psi) per element; 4 bar (60 psi) per housing

Feed water

  • Maximum SDI₁₅: 5.0
  • Maximum Turbidity: 1 NTU
  • Pretreatment is recommended for the removal of free chlorine and other oxidizing agents to prevent damage to membranes. Oxidizing agents, such as free chlorine, in contact with polyamide membranes, may result in shortened operating life or membrane failure.

Mechanical / hydraulic

Design Information

  • Oltremare SAL4 - 4021 (c)

    • Permeate Flow: 3.88 m³/day (1025 gpd)
    • Maximum Feed Flow: 2.95 m³/h (13 gpm)
    • Membrane Area: 3.2 m² (35 ft²)
  • Oltremare SAL4 - 4040 (b)

    • Permeate Flow: 9.8 m³/day (2600 gpd)
    • Maximum Feed Flow: 3.6 m³/h (16 gpm)
    • Membrane Area: 7.9 m² (85 ft²)
  • Oltremare SAL4 – 8040 (b)

    • Permeate Flow: 45.4 m³/day (12000 gpd)
    • Maximum Feed Flow: 17 m³/h (75 gpm)
    • Membrane Area: 37.2 m² (400 ft²)

Test conditions (a): 500 ppm NaCl, 6.9 bar (100 psi), 25 °C (77 °F), 15% recovery for 4040 and 8040, 10% for 4021, pH 8.0, 30 minutes operation. Flow rates will be no more than 15% below the values shown. Permeate flow is before heat preconditioning; a loss of flow is expected after the first heat sanitization cycle.

Operational Guidance

  • Start-up: Flushing elements for 30 minutes at low pressure, discarding permeate during the flush, is recommended prior to operation.
  • Heat Preconditioning: New heat sanitizable spiral elements must be pre-conditioned prior to initial use by exposure to hot water. Suitable quality water (chlorine-free, non-scaling/fouling, RO permeate preferred) must be used.
    • Temperature increase rate should not exceed 4 °C/minute to 85 °C.
    • Cooling rate should not exceed 7 °C/minute.
    • A typical conditioning procedure involves flushing to drain, recycling warm water (< 45 °C at < 25 psig trans-membrane pressure), introducing hot water to 80 °C, maintaining temperature for 60-90 minutes, then cooling.
    • Trans-membrane pressure should be kept below 25 psig (1.7 bar) when warm or hot water (45 °C or higher) is fed to membranes.
  • Permeate Flow Loss: A loss of permeate flow (normally 25–50%) is expected after repeated hot water sanitization cycles, with 90% of this loss occurring during the first heat sanitization. Factors influencing this loss include temperature change rate, feedwater type, foulants, scale, flow rates, and pressure.
  • Cleaning: During cleaning, check temperature and pH. The pH range is 1-11 for temperatures lower than 25 °C; at 45 °C, the maximum pH is 10.5.
  • Storage: Elements must be stored appropriately to ensure proper operation and prevent membrane damage.
